Complete with a Georgia Power hard hat, a man posing as a contractor appeared to be legitimate when he went into a DeKalb County business.

“He advised an employee that he needed to install a new meter and that the business would have to pay on site to have the job completed, or he would have to turn the lights off,” Lt. Brandon Gurley with Brookhaven Police said.

But when the business owner called Georgia Power, he learned the “contractor” was running a scam, police said. Georgia Power confirmed that it does not collect past due accounts in person, nor does it charge customers for hardware or equipment.

Investigators want to warn others to the scam and try to identify the person responsible, police said Friday.

The suspect is described as a 6-foot-2 white man in his early 40s with black hair and brown eyes, Gurley said. The neatly groomed man wears a red collared shirt, blue jeans, brown boots and a white Georgia Power hard hat and may drive a white GMC van with Georgia Power decals or placards.
