Police: Driver seriously injured trying to pass school bus
A driver allegedly attempting to pass a school bus was seriously injured after colliding with the bus Friday afternoon in south Fulton County, according to police.
Shortly after 4 p.m., a bus traveling westbound on Spence Road, near Fairburn, slowed to a stop to let a student off, according to Detective Melissa Parker with Fulton County police. The bus driver activated the yellow flashing caution lights as it stopped in the 8000 block, Parker said.
Investigators believe a Volkswagen Beetle was traveling eastbound when it drove around traffic in attempts to beat the bus. While attempting to pass stopped vehicles, the Beetle struck the driver's side corner of the school bus, Parker said.
The driver of the Volkswagen, whose name was not released, had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.
The female bus driver was also transported to Grady due to neck pain, a school district spokeswoman said.
Three students on the bus, including two from Creekside High School and one from Bear Creak Middle, were not injured. The students were released to parents at the scene of the crash, which temporarily blocked Spence Road about two hours Friday afternoon.
