Police are holding a 63-year-old driver on charges of murder and aggravated assault in the death of a woman his car struck and killed.

Alex Mason will go before a judge at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say Mason intentionally struck 53-year-old Marilyn Redding with his car about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in southeast Atlanta. The mother of 10 died at the scene, at Gartrell Street and Boulevard, Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Kim Jones told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“It was reported by witnesses that Mr. Mason revved the engine in his vehicle, drove the vehicle toward the victim while she was walking on the sidewalk, jumped the curb and struck the victim,” Jones said.

The driver had an altercation with Redding about three weeks ago, police told Channel 2 Action News.

According to Channel 2, witnesses reportedly pulled Mason out of the car and held him until police arrived.

Mason was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being transferred to the Fulton County Jail late Monday morning, jail spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.

Mason has several previous arrests in Fulton County. Jail records show he was charged with simple battery in 1997; cocaine possession, driving on a suspended license and theft in 2001; armed robbery and aggravated assault in 2002; and driving under the influence in 2011.
