A deadly crash involving a pedestrian on I-20 snarled DeKalb County traffic for nearly four hours on Friday morning as police investigated.
The eastbound lanes of I-20 were shut down near Panola Road after the pedestrian was struck and killed shortly before 8:40 a.m. Georgia State Patrol spokesman Lt. Mark Riley said.
Few details have been released, but investigators said someone standing on the interstate was struck by a truck just east of the Panola Road exit. Police have not released the name of the person killed, and it’s unclear why they were in the road.
Traffic was diverted off the interstate for several hours police investigated, leading to major backups in the area. All lanes were reopened just before 12:30 p.m., but extreme delays remain heading into Lithonia, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Authorities are still working to identify the victim’s family and said additional details would be released later.
