The parents of a 1-year-old Milton girl have been arrested in connection with her death.

Shaun Jewell, 35, and Altair Murphy-Hubbard, 30, both of Milton, were arrested Tuesday after a "lengthy investigation" into their daughter's death, according to a news release from Milton police.

The child, whose name is being withheld by police, died Oct. 22. Her parents called paramedics and reported their daughter was having trouble breathing, according to the news release. She was transported to a hospital but died later that day, authorities said.

After the girl's death an autopsy was performed. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the girl's death as a homicide by medical neglect. Detectives launched an investigation and concluded the girl's death was "allegedly due to a pattern of neglect and lack of medical care from Jewell and Murphy-Hubbard," according to the news release.

Murphy-Hubbard was arrested on charges of felony murder and cruelty to children in the first and second degrees.

Jewell, who police say was arrested by Sandy Springs and Milton police in 2012 and 2013 on charges of domestic battery and cruelty to children, was taken into custody on charges of felony murder and cruelty to children in the first degree.

Both are being held without bail at the Fulton County Jail.
