Several people were hurt in Camden County — and at least one person died — after taking recreational drugs that emergency officials later discovered were laced with a deadly amount of fentanyl.

Authorities are still trying to determine who distributed the deadly mixture of narcotics throughout Camden County, which resulted in numerous instances of people falling unconscious and unresponsive on Friday. Camden County is in the southeast corner of Georgia along where the state meets Florida.

First responders tried to perform life-saving measures including CPR and emergency Narcan administration on each patient suffering an overdose from the dangerous drug blend, the agency said.

“Unfortunately, not all were able to be revived from their condition,” Camden emergency management said.

It is not clear how many people were injured as a result of the drugs. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has contacted Camden EMA for more information.

Each life-threatening emergency was discovered to have been caused by “the use of illegal recreational narcotics laced with a deadly amount of fentanyl,” Camden emergency management said.

“Investigation into these incidents has revealed that an unknown person, or persons, had recently distributed these deadly mixes of narcotics into our community,” the agency said. “If anyone has recently purchased recreational use narcotics, including marijuana, law enforcement is pleading that they not use them as they may be related to the incidents in question.”

Additionally, the county’s emergency officials are urging people with loved ones battling an addiction to “please check on them to ensure they have not obtained any of these tainted substances.”

“At this time, ALL recreational use narcotics, including marijuana, should be considered a serious threat to life safety,” the agency said.
