A New York man who shot and killed two people attempting to rob his home Tuesday was arrested for using an illegally owned handgun, according to police.

Ronald Stolarczyk, 64, of Deerfield, faces a felony charge of criminal possession of a firearm, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.

According to police, Patricia Anne Talerico, 57, of Utica, and Nicolas A. Talerico, 27, of Utica, were attempting to rob Stolarczyk's home Tuesday afternoon, WSYR reported.

Patricia Talerico was pronounced dead at scene, while Nicholas Talerico was taken to a hospital, where he later died, the Post-Standard reported.

According to a news release from the New York State Police, an investigation by troopers suggested that at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Stolarczyk interrupted a burglary and shot two people with an illegally owned handgun.

Stolarczyk was taken to the Oneida County Jail, police said.
