A welfare check on a resident of a Cobb County mobile home community led police to a gruesome discovery.

The body of Joseph Walker Jones, 48, of Austell, was found Thursday morning at the Village at Six Flags Road, Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb County police said Friday.

Officers were dispatched to the Fox Road community to check on the welfare of Jones, Pierce said.

Jones was the victim of an apparent homicide, Pierce said. Details regarding how Jones died were not immediately released.

Jones had lived in the neighborhood for about a year, and news of his death shocked his next-door neighbor, Angela Downs. Jones was a military veteran who lived alone and was very friendly, Downs told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“I was devastated when they told me what happened,” Downs said Friday night. “There’s not a lot of drama back here. We try to look out for each other.”

Downs said she hadn’t seen Jones in three or four weeks, but didn’t think much about it because his small, red car was gone. She said she assumed he was out of town. Thursday morning, she was shocked to see the police officers at her neighbor’s home.
