Security personnel at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia, shot and killed a man Friday morning after he opened fire on a fellow sailor at the base, officials said.

Capt. Chad Vincelette, commanding officer of NAS Oceana, called the incident “an isolated domestic shooting.” Authorities did not immediately identify the people involved in the shooting, although Vincelette said they were both sailors assigned to the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 37.

Capt. Chad Vincelette, commanding officer of NAS Oceana, said a male sailor opened fire around 6:45 a.m. on a female sailor in a parking lot outside of Hanger 145.

“The shooter was quickly identified, shot and killed by my Naval Air Station Oceana security personnel,” Vincelette said.

Vincellette said the female sailor was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening after the shooting.

The base was put on lockdown for less than an hour as authorities responded to the incident.

Authorities are investigating how the male sailor was able to get a firearm on base. Vinecelette said NAS Ocean has a no-weapons policy.

Authorities continue to investigate the case.

Update 8:02 a.m. EDT April 4: Naval Air Station Oceana said it "experienced an active shooter incident." The base was put on lockdown at 7:17 a.m., WVEC reported.

NAS officials said on Twitter that the shooter has "been contained" and taken to the hospital.

Around 7:17 a.m. base officials said it NAS Ocean was on lockdown after a "security incident."

Officials at the base said the shooter has been contained, and that a victim has been taken to a hospital.

Officials said people should avoid the base and area.
