The candidates were fired up for the second round of GOP debates, set in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. Here are some of their best zingers from the night:
CARLY FIORINA
- "I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said." — In response to Donald Trump's "look at that face" remark in Rolling Stone.
JEB BUSH
- "Everready. It's very high energy, Donald." — What Bush wants as his Secret Service code name.
- "To subject my wife into the middle of a raucous political conversation was completely inappropriate and I hope you apologize for that." — In response to Trump's comment on Bush's wife and his immigration views.
- The 'Bush Brothers' exchange: Jeb Bush flashed a clear knowledge of the issues — and his lack of smoothness as a speaker. But confronted with what some consider to be his greatest political liability, his last name, the son of one president and brother of another scored points with the crowd after Donald Trump said, "Your brother's administration gave us Barack Obama." Clearly prepared for the attack, Bush shot back, "As it relates to my brother, there's one thing I know for sure: He kept us safe," Bush said as the crowd erupted in applause. The exchange was just one example in which Trump, usually a master in the spotlight, failed to score a clear victory.
DONALD TRUMP
- "Humble." — What Trump wants as his Secret Service code name.
- "Your brother gave us Barack Obama." — In response to Jeb Bush on his family's legacy.
- "Rand Paul shouldn't even be on this stage. He's number 11."
RAND PAUL
- "There will always be a Bush or Clinton for you if you want to go back to war in Iraq."
CHRIS CHRISTIE
- "You're both successful people, congratulations. You know who's not successful? The middle class in this country. They could care less about your careers. Let's stop this childish back and forth." — In response to Trump and Fiorina on their business track records.
SCOTT WALKER
- "We don't need an Apprentice in the White House. We have one right now."
MARCO RUBIO
- "You should ask him questions in detail about the foreign policy issues our president will confront, because you had better be able to lead our country on the first day." — When asked about Trump's recent struggle to answer questions about world leaders.
- "America is not a planet." — On climate change.
BOBBY JINDAL
- "Let's stop treating Donald Trump like a Republican." — In response to question about violating the "11th Commandment" prohibiting attacks on fellow Republicans.
LINDSEY GRAHAM
- "Strom Thurmond had four kids after he was 67. If you're not willing to do that, we'd better come up with a new legal immigration system."
- "That's the first thing I'm going to do as president — we're going to drink more." — In reference to sitting down and socializing with political opponents.
GEORGE E. PATAKI
- "This is an important election with an enormous number of challenges facing the American people," he said, "and the first four questions are about Donald Trump."
