A cold front that brought rain over the weekend is responsible for the cooler weather Monday morning in metro Atlanta.
Temperatures are in the mid-40s to start the day and will only reach the mid-60s by the afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News. There is no rain in Monday’s forecast, however.
“Lots of sunshine in your forecast for your Monday,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “Good weather to get outside.”
Atlanta’s projected high of 66 degrees is about average for this time of year. Temperatures are only going up from here, climbing into the mid-70s by Wednesday, according to Channel 2.
Monahan said Tuesday will see a projected high of 70 degrees with a slight 20% chance of a shower.
“If you’ve got outdoor plans, go ahead with them Tuesday,” he said. “Wednesday though we’ve got another weather system coming in that’s going to bring us rain (and) an isolated storm chance.”
The severe weather risk is limited with Wednesday’s storm system, he said. The National Weather Service has categorized it as a Level 1 threat out of five for most of North Georgia.
There is a 90% chance of thunderstorms Wednesday, according to Channel 2.
“We’re going to be dry today across North Georgia and dry Tuesday, but as we go into Wednesday and Thursday, heavy rain moves in,” Monahan said. “A possibility for an inch or more across parts of North Georgia.”
The rain should help to knock more pollen out of the air. Sunday’s count was the highest so far this season at 6,974 pollen particles per cubic meters of air, according to Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, the organization that tracks the daily pollen count.
Trees like oak, pine, sycamore, sweet gum and hackberry were the top contributors. The count is expected to be lower Monday after Sunday’s rainstorms.

There are major delays getting into the city from the western suburbs following a crash on I-20, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Injuries were reported in the wreck on I-20 East at Chapel Hill Road, and all lanes were blocked at 6:30 a.m.
“Massive backups now in from Douglasville, 40 mins of bumper-to-bumper delays trying to get to the crash scene,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.
Commuters can use U.S. 78 as an alternate, but it will likely be crowded as the jam on I-20 worsens, he said.
