The child was struck about 3:45 p.m. in the St. Louis suburb of Wentzville, according to Officer Jacob Schmidt, a spokesman for the Wentzville Police Department. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Police said the girl and her family were among a group of people who bought treats from the truck, KMOV reported. The child was hit when the family walked back across the street, the television station reported.

“It’s a heartbreaking incident,” Schmidt said. “I can’t help but think of my own family and children. It’s sad all the way around.”

The girl’s name has not been released.

The ice cream truck was loaded on a tow truck after the incident, the Post-Dispatch reported. A telephone number on the truck goes to a voicemail for Cool Times Ice Cream, but no one responded to a message left Sunday night, the newspaper reported.
