A Michigan school district will be taking its free meals for needy students on the road.
The food is currently available at no charge for students at three different locations in the Swartz Creek Community School District, WEYI reported. In addition to the district's high school and elementary school locations, students this summer will be served food from a mobile unit -- a food truck converted from a special needs school bus, the television station reported.
"That way we can service our community mobile and bring the food to the students that actually need it," Michael Wensel, food service director for Swartz Creek Community Schools, told WEYI.
Wensel told the television station the district currently serves about 2,000 breakfasts, 6,000 lunches and 400 dinners each day. He added that since some students were unable to get to the school in time to get the free meals last summer, district officials decided to bring the free meals to the students.
“Last year we serviced about 300 kids district wide a day during the summer last year, I'm looking to double that,” Wensel stated.
District officials said they hope to have the bus renovated and dishing out meals by the end of May, WEYI reported.
