A MARTA bus driver and 10 passengers were injured Thursday morning when the bus and another vehicle collided in East Point, officials said.

The crash happened at 6:30 a.m. and briefly shut down lanes on Main Street at Ponders Way north of the city’s downtown area.

Enrique Acosta said he was on his way home from work when the bus was hit from behind.

“I was leaning on the window when I was listening to music,” he said. “I was about to doze off. An 18-wheel truck hit us and he drove off right after.”

According to MARTA officials, 15 to 20 people were on the bus at the time.

Of the 11 who were injured, six were taken to hospitals to be checked out, the transit agency said.

Acosta told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at least three ambulances responded to the scene. He was experiencing back pain but wanted to make it home before he went to a hospital.

“Three people fell, because when the bus got hit they were standing up and then they fell,” he said, adding “there were a lot of injuries.”

The bus appeared to sustain rear-end damage in the crash.
