A lasting tribute now sits along I-85 in Gwinnett County to three members of a family who were killed in 2008 in a crash caused by a drunk driver.
The state Department of Transportation unveiled a memorial marker last week near Indian Trail Lilburn Road, where three members of the Randle family were killed en route home from a relative’s wedding in Utah.
Fallen Randle lost a son, daughter and infant grandson in the accident. It also killed their limo driver, Mark Gay, 44, of Lawrenceville, and caused permanent injuries to Fallen Randle’s husband.
Fallen Randle, other relatives and friends were on hand for the memorial marker’s unveiling.
“This will bring closure to all of us,” she told WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News.
Cody Rhoden, 25, was sentenced in 2010 to 40 years in prison for causing the wreck. He pleaded guilty to serious injury by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and four counts of vehicular homicide.
Witnesses said Rhoden had been drinking beer at the Braves home opener on March 31, 2008 and was speeding and weaving between lanes when his vehicle clipped the limousine carrying the Randles.
The memorial sign lists the names of Whitney E. Randle, Alexander D. Randle and Kayden A. Randle-Finley.
