Two Marietta men died in a one-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning near the intersection of Westside and South Cobb drives.

About 5:15 a.m., Marietta police pulled over Marquis D. Parker, 28, for a traffic violation at the intersection of Sandtown Road and Westside Drive. As the officer approached the car, Parker, who was driving a black Chevrolet Camaro, sped away and headed eastbound on Westside Drive, police said.

Marietta police spokesman David Baldwin said the officer did not pursue Parker after he sped away from the scene of the traffic stop.

Minutes later, Parker’s car was found by Cobb police upside down in an embankment near the intersection of Westside and South Cobb drives. Parker and his passenger, 31-year-old Fernando J. Edwards, were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The men were not wearing seat belts, Cobb police spokesman Dana Pierce said.

Investigators believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The Cobb County Police Department is investigating the crash because the incident ended outside of the Marietta city limits.
