Police in two counties are searching for a man accused of firing at a deputy who had attempted a traffic stop in Fayette County.

But the suspect, whose name was not released, disappeared after running into woods at the Fayette-Clayton county line, Lt. Brent Rowan of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The incident began around noon when a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop in northern Fayette County, Rowan said. Instead of stopping, the suspect drove off and the deputy pursued him northbound on Helmer Road.

After turning onto Timberlane Drive, the suspect got out of his vehicle and the deputy followed, Rowan said. The deputy used a Taser to stop the suspect, but was unsuccessful.

“When he deployed his Taser, he missed the suspect,” Rowan said.

The suspect then pointed a firearm at the deputy and fired a shot before running into the woods, Rowan said.

Clayton County police and sheriff’s deputies joined Fayette deputies in the hourlong search for the suspect before running out of leads, Rowan said.

Investigators searched the suspect’s vehicle and determined it had not been stolen, Rowan said.
