A man is behind bars after police said he attacked a woman as she was walking near a Roswell business district and raped her.

Demarcus Jenkins, 39, is charged with rape and aggravated assault in the attack, which left the woman with “significant visible injuries,” according to Roswell police spokesman Officer Tim Lupo.

The attack happened near a Bank of America and Dreamland BBQ restaurant on Alpharetta Highway late Sunday night. Officers were sent to the area shortly before midnight after a 911 caller reported finding an injured woman, Lupo said. The woman said she had just been assaulted.

Investigators determined the woman had been walking down Mansell Road when she was “verbally accosted and physically assaulted by Jenkins.” The victim and Jenkins did not know each other, Lupo said.

The woman was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not released.

Officers developed a description of the suspect and within 15 minutes found Jenkins and took him into custody, Lupo said. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail, where he remains.
