Commemorate 9/11 elsewhere around metro Atlanta

Sunday marks 15 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and thousands of Georgians will gather to reflect and remember those lives lost.

Cities across North Fulton are hosting public vigils and commemorative events to honor the deceased. Here’s a roundup of those events:

September 11 Liturgy of Rememberance (Sandy Springs)

  • Starting at 10 a.m.
  • Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church, 805 Mt. Vernon Hwy, NW
  • The Sandy Springs Fire Department will assemble fire trucks with ladders raised and the American flag displayed. The Honor Guard of the Sandy Springs Police Department will present colors. Pipes and Drums of the Fire Department will march in procession. City, state and federal lawmakers are scheduled to attend. Congregation will assemble outside for "civil" portion  the service.
  • Potluck luncheon honoring our local first responders is scheduled after the 10:00am Liturgy of Remembrance. This event is free to the public.

Johns Creek Sept. 11 Commemoration Event

  • Starting at 2 p.m.
  • Newtown Park Amphitheater, 3150 Old Alabama Rd.
  • Keynote speaker includes Lisa Dernovish, vice commander of the Alpharetta American Legion Post #201. Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker will also provide remarks.

Roswell 9/11 Tribute Ceremony at Roswell Area Park

  • Starting at 1:30 p.m.
  • Mike Gann 9/11 Memorial, located near the lake in Roswell Area Park (10495 Woodstock Rd.)
  • Tribute will feature the Roswell Fire & Police Honor Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Pipe Band, the Holcomb Bridge Middle School Chorus, and a floating wreath presentation.

9/11 Service Honoring Victims (Milton)

  • Milton High School, 13025 Birmingham Hwy.
  • Milton High School students, city firefighters and police will set up a 9/11 memorial on the school's front lawn from 3:30 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 9. Residents are welcome to join. 
  • The student-led memorial service will take place at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Milton High School.
  • Residents can assist with removing flags from the school's front lawn from  3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 12.

  • Starting at 10:30 a.m.

Special Liturgy Marking the 15th Anniversary of 9/11 (Milton)

  • Starting at noon.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 535 Rucker Rd., Alpharetta.

Patriot Day Chow Down (Milton)

  • Starting at 4 p.m.
  • Milton's Cuisine, 800 Mayfield Rd.
  • All Milton first responders invited. Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood is scheduled to make remarks.
