Volunteers to pull 30 tons of trash from Lake Lanier's shores

Sept 14, 2016

Next weekend, hordes of volunteers will storm the shores of Lake Lanier to pick up trash — about 30 tons of it, in fact.

The 28th annual "Lake Lanier Shore Sweep" will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.

"With over 1,000 volunteers collecting an average of 30 tons of trash along the shores of Lake Lanier each year, this program is an enormous success," Joanna Cloud, executive director of the Lake Lanier Association, said in a news release.

A total of 12 locations will be targeted, Cloud said, including several marinas, Lake Lanier Islands, the Lake Lanier Olympic venue and a handful of parks. Advanced registration for volunteers is not mandatory but helpful for scheduling, Cloud said. Those interested in participating can email lakeinfo@lakelanier.org.

Volunteers who turn in at least one full bag of trash will received a free T-shirt.
