After less than three months on the job, the Polk County school system superintendent resigned Thursday, according to a media report.
Darrell Wetherington was suspended with pay in February after an incident involving his estranged wife, northwestgeorgianews.com reported. The resignation was announced during a called meeting of the school board.
Wetherington was suspended after he made an unannounced visit to his estranged wife’s classroom Feb. 17, officials said. Jennifer Wetherington filed for divorce Feb. 6.

Wetherington also was ordered by a judge to avoid contact with his estranged wife after he allegedly showed up at her residence about 12:30 a.m. Feb. 17, the news website reported.
Wetherington, who took over as superintendent Jan. 1, plans to pursue job prospects in metro Atlanta, according to the report.
“I thank Polk School District for the opportunity to work there for four years,” he said after Thursday’s meeting. “They have great administrators, teachers and students in the district.
“I have some job prospects in the Atlanta area, and though I don’t plan on leaving the community, I do plan to commute back and forth to those opportunities.”
