Another day, another report about a bear roaming northwest Atlanta.
A police spokeswoman said a small black bear was located Friday near a home on 26th Street.
The animal was monitored by police until wildlife personnel arrived and trapped it, police spokeswoman S.R. Brown said There were no injuries.
The resident, Mark McClain, told Channel 2 Action News: “One of my neighbors comes panicked, knocking on our front door, and says, ‘There’s a bear in your backyard.’ And I was like, ‘Really?’
“I go look outside, and, yes, there’s a bear roaming around right here, sniffing at my car.”
The bear has been relocated to the wild in northeast Georgia, a Department of Natural Resources official said.
Kevin Von Seggern said he used a tranquilizer dart shot from a rifle to subdue the animal. After putting the bear in a transport cage, he took it to a DNR facility in Social Circle overnight.
Saturday, he took the bear into the mountains and released it.
The incident occurred a day after police received calls of a bear in a neighborhood about two miles away.
Von Seggern said it probably was the same bear.
“If there was more than one bear, we would be receiving calls from more than one area,” he said.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is now patrolling the area, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Bears aren’t an everyday occurrence in metro Atlanta, but they are around.
Two years ago, black bears were spotted in Dunwoody, Johns Creek and Norcross. About the same time, a bear was killed while trying to cross a road in Cherokee County
