A sinkhole on State Street just north of 14th Street in Atlanta could take all night to fill, officials said.

The water main broke about noon causing the sinkhole to fill. It took crews about eight hours to empty the sinkhole, Atlanta Watershed officials said Tuesday.

Crews are working to fill the street with concrete then asphalt, according to Channel 2 Action News. The area near State Street and 14 Street will be roped off until repairs are complete.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area until repairs are complete.

About 35 houses and four fire hydrants were affected by the break, but water service was restored before 6 p.m.

Atlanta Watershed officials were nearly done pumping out the sinkhole about 5:30 p.m. according to a tweet.

“No disruption in service to customers,” the tweet read.

The break “probably was due to the age of the pipe,” said Lillian Govus, spokeswoman for the City of Atlanta Watershed Management.

Govus said the department would notify affected residents by phone when repairs are complete, as well as post on social media. Officials will test the sewer line to be sure it’s not compromised.
