The 2012 Mayor’s Cup Amateur Boxing Championship & Benefit will be held Saturday at the Civic Center to raise money for the Atlanta Police Athletic League.

The event begins at 5 p.m., ends at midnight and will feature 10 fights pitting APD officers against firefighters and other public safety officials. Among the featured fights: Atlanta Police Officer Alicia Turner will face off against Grady Hospital Paramedic Danielle Ashley.

A silent auction, including a chance for lunch with Chief George Turner, allows bids through an on line site (http://www.32auctions.com/PAL). There also will be a raffle at the event for prizes, including gift cards and a flat-screen TV.

“Participation in the PAL program has had a positive impact on the children who attend one of the centers. There are countless stories of youth avoiding going down a dangerous path because of their participation in PAL programs.” Turner said in a statement.

The Police Athletic League operates in two area centers and provides activities for children in the Atlanta area. In addition to a boxing program, there are basketball, baseball, football, cheerleading and tennis programs. There are also dance and drama programs, homework assistance, computer training, a garden club and a summer camp.
