More than 4,000 gallons of sewage spilled from a storm drain onto a Norcross road on Monday, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources said.

The spill occurred at a gravity main on Estates Court around 2 p.m. Water from a nearby storm drain washed out a slope, damaging the main and leading to the spill, the water department said.

The spill took three hours to stop, with crews finishing work around 5 p.m. By then, 4,069 gallons of sewage had spilled. Some sewage had entered an unnamed tributary of Beaver Ruin Creek.

The department raked the area and spread lime in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were posted to alert residents to the spill and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified. Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastro-enteritis and E. coli.
