A Midtown intersection reopened to traffic overnight after a city of Atlanta crew repaired a water main that was broken by a contractor Wednesday afternoon.
The intersection of 10th and Juniper streets was reopened by 2 a.m. Thursday.
Water started spewing from the 12-inch main in the middle of Wednesday afternoon's rush hour.
"[We] were hoping to dig down on the main and see if it could be repaired under pressure so no one would lose water," Department of Watershed Management spokeswoman Janet Ward said Wednesday evening. "Unfortunately, the concrete is too thick, and we can't isolate the main without shutting off the water."
Ward said valves were shut off at 8th and 12th streets, cutting water on Juniper between those streets.
"We have informed the senior high-rise at 10th and Juniper and have bottled water ready to deliver should the repair take more than four hours once the water is shut off," Ward said.
Crews later determined that the break affected only two fire hydrants and no residents.
