Medical College of Georgia officials announced Thursday they will open the new Northwest Georgia Clinical Campus in Rome.

The campus will be running by July 2013 and is part of an overall plan to increase enrollment in the college's School of Medicine. The goal is for the class to grow from 190 students to 300 students by 2020 to help meet the state's need for more doctors, officials said.

Georgia currently ranks 44th in the nation in physicians per capita, according to national statistics.

The Augusta-based college already runs clinical campuses in Albany and Savannah. The Medical College of Georgia/University of Georgia Medical Partnership Campus opened in August in Athens with 40 students.
