MARTA rail service has returned to normal after smoke was spotted inside a tunnel near the Midtown station Monday morning, officials said.

Passengers were offloaded at the Midtown station after a train experienced a brake issue, MARTA spokesman Erik Burton said.

They stayed on the platform until the next train arrived to carry them to their final destinations.

No injuries were reported.

During the disruption, trains were single-tracked on the northbound and southbound rail lines.

A little more than a week ago, MARTA officials had to evacuate northbound and southbound rail lines between the Peachtree Center and Lindbergh Center stations after what was thought to be a fire broke out at the North Avenue station.

Lt. Aston Greene of MARTA Police and Emergency Management said an arc of electricity from a high-voltage rail, not a fire, apparently created smoke that filled the train May 4.

No one was injured in that incident, which came at a time when MARTA's ridership had increased following the I-85 bridge collapse. The bridge reopened over the weekend, more than a month before the original June 15 deadline.
