The Marietta Blue Devils and the Rome Wolves will take the field Thursday in the first high school football game of the season, and the mayors of both cities will engage in a friendly wager to wear the other team’s colors if their school is defeated.

Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin is offering his Rome counterpart, Bill Collins, the honor of wearing an autographed Blue Devil hat with a The Big Chicken lapel pin if the Blue Devils are victorious. The game is set for 8:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Rome’s Barron Stadium.

This second-annual challenge is one Tumlin hopes to win. In 2018, the Blue Devils fell to the Wolves, so Tumlin was forced to wear Rome’s red and black colors and give his version of the Rome High Wolf Howl. If the Blue Devils win this year, Collins will sport Marietta’s blue and white colors and Tumlin’s hat.

For Blue Devils fans who want to drive to Rome to watch the team take the field against the Wolves, Barron Stadium is located at 300 West Third Street in downtown Rome.
