How much does it cost to ride MARTA? Some candidates don't know

Oct 13, 2009

So do you know Atlanta better than some of the city's mayoral candidates?

Maybe so.

Four of the candidates mostly struck out on three "lightning round" questions posed during a hour-long debate taped by WXIA-TV that aired Tuesday.

For example, how much does it cost to ride MARTA and when was the last time you rode the system?

Councilwoman Mary Norwood said she didn't know how much MARTA cost, nor could she remember the last time she rode the rails. Former state Sen. Kasim Reed guessed $2.25 and said he recently rode MARTA with his mother. Attorney Jesse Spikes said MARTA cost $1.75 the last time he rode the system and thought the price went up by $1. City Council President Lisa Borders said she took MARTA last week with her father and it cost $2.

Answer: $2. MARTA raised its one-way fare on Oct. 1 from $1.75 to $2. A MARTA Breeze ticket does include a 50 cent purchase price .
