Twenty-four horses died in a fire overnight at a private stable, a Clayton County fire department official said Thursday.

The blaze was on Noah’s Ark Road, according to spokeswoman Laura Richardson. Only one horse escaped.

Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services crews were  dispatched at 11:42 p.m. Wednesday.

“When our crews arrived,” Richardson said, “the structure was already fully involved.”

An investigation is underway to determine the cause.

“It’s extremely tragic,” Richardson said. “It’s devastating for the owners.”
