More than 200 officers were involved in what jail officials are calling the Fulton County Jail’s largest shakedown ever.

And they recovered 21 homemade weapons on Tuesday, Fulton County sheriff’s spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.

Officers uncovered do-it-yourself tattoo kits and other prohibited items to include excessive quantities of junk food that can be used as currency within the jail and present a sanitation hazard, Flanagan said.

Chief jailer Col. Mark Adger said officers found various shanks and other makeshift weapons in rafters and in the ceiling.

They want to send inmates, “A serious message that we’re not gonna tolerate any dangerous contraband,” Adger told Channel 2 Action News.

But he considers the operation a success in that only one cellphone was found.

“We didn’t find as much as we thought we would,” he told Channel 2.

Teams from around the state included 170 Georgia Corrections Tactical Squad officers who made up the majority of the 230 specially-trained men and women sweeping cells in Fulton’s jail.

Adger said he thought officers might find more cellphones because eight cellphones were found a few weeks ago in a murder suspect’s cell.

“The investigation into the corruption that led to the cellphones getting into this jail is ongoing and we hope to make an arrest,” Adger told Channel 2.
