Norcross is currently Gwinnett's busiest city for public transportation, with two express bus routes to downtown Atlanta and the Emory University area and four local bus routes stopping in the city. If voters approve a referendum to bring MARTA into Gwinnett County, Norcross will become a hub for public transportation and connect the county to MARTA'S train system with a Gold Line stop on Jimmy Carter Boulevard. That train connection could bring transformative development to the Jimmy Carter Boulevard area.

In addition to being the first Gwinnett connection to heavy rail, Norcross is poised to have access to bus rapid transit, rapid bus routes and new express bus routes for commuters. The county’s transit plan, included in its pending contract with MARTA, also includes programs to subsidize Uber and Lyft rides to transit stations, and paratransit for those with disabilities.

Norcross will keep its current bus routes and see much of its transit expansion in the long term, according to the county plan. Here’s what Norcross will get if the referendum is passed:

Within 5 years

• Paratransit service

Within 10 to 30 years

• Heavy rail connecting Gold Line to transit hub at Jimmy Carter Boulevard (service projected to begin in 2030)

• Bus rapid transit route from Sugarloaf Mills will terminate at Jimmy Carter Boulevard station

• Rapid bus route from Jimmy Carter Boulevard hub to Alpharetta (Fulton County)

• New express route beginning in Hall County, stopping at the I-985/Mall of Georgia Park-and-Ride, McGinnis Ferry Park-and-Ride and Jimmy Carter Boulevard hub

• New express route from Indian Trail Park-and-Ride to Buckhead MARTA station

Early voting has begun for the referendum. You can cast a ballot from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gwinnett County elections office at 455 Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville every day through March 15 — that includes Saturdays and Sundays. There are also seven satellite voting locations that open on March 4.
