The Atlanta Police Department is accepting applications for an upcoming Citizens Police Academy.

The eight-week course provides the public with an interactive look at how the department operates. It begins May 29 and is held every Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the Atlanta Public Safety Headquarters, 226 Peachtree St. SW.

The course includes about 24 hours of instruction with topics such as crime lab, 911, identity theft, use of force, SWAT and homicide investigations. In April, APD announced its first “L.G.B.T. Citizens Police Academy,” which was open to anyone but specifically geared toward the LGBT community.

Potential candidates for the upcoming academy must be metro Atlanta residents and at least 21 years old. That may not have a felony conviction or a misdemeanor within one year of the application.

The deadline for applications to be submitted is May 22. Space is limited.
