Update (Dec. 11): This class is now full. The department may hold another class in spring 2020.

Original story:The Gwinnett County Police Department is holding an informational class about human trafficking next week after noticing an "increase of worrisome rumors" about the issue.

Rumors have popped up on social media recently about people attempting to take women and children for the purpose of sex trafficking. The Johns Creek Police Department posted on Facebook last week about multiple unfounded reports stemming from a woman who had been aggressively panhandling.

The Gwinnett County class will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 18 at police headquarters. Topics will include the definition of human trafficking, Georgia statistics and laws, “who victims and traffickers are” an what residents can do to combat the issue, according to a department release.

The class is recommended for people aged 16 and older due to “the graphic nature of human trafficking,” the department said. Those interested in attending should contact Master Police Officer Ashley M. Wilson at ashley.wilson@gwinnettcounty.com. The class is limited to 120 people, but more classes could be added if this one fills up, the department said. The department headquarters is located at 770 Hi-Hope Rd. in Lawrenceville.
