A 13-year-old girl was struck on a highway in Paulding County on Monday and flown to an Atlanta hospital with a head injury.

Nadia Sutton, of Dallas, was walking along the south shoulder of Ga. 61 at about 3:45 p.m. when she darted into the roadway and into the path of a Nissan Maxima, the Georgia State Patrol told the AJC. She was knocked onto the car and struck the vehicle's windshield.

The girl was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite with a head injury, according to the GSP. Her condition was not available.

It is unclear why the child was walking along the highway. The incident occurred outside Paulding County High School, but she is not a student there, said Cpl. Brandon Gurley of the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the Nissan will not be charged, the GSP said.

The accident forced the closure of Ga. 61, also known as Villa Rica Highway, for more than an hour, Gurley said.
