Residents can get free cholesterol and blood pressure screenings at a health and wellness fair in DeKalb County this weekend.

The Saturday event is organized by the Atlanta chapter of the Association of Black Cardiologists, and intends to raise awareness around heart disease and cardiovascular health.

On average, someone in the United States has a heart attack or stroke every 40 seconds, the group said in a statement, adding that nearly 44% of African American men and 48% of African American women have some form of cardiovascular disease.

The health fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 16, at the New Life Community Ministries located at 3592 Flat Shoals Road.

In addition to the cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, attendees can get one-on-one appointments with local doctors and educational diet and exercise information.

“These programs are designed to help attendees understand that heart disease can be preventable and heart healthy practices are important for longevity,” the organization said. “The event encourages community-wide participation in heart disease prevention, education, detection and lifestyle changes that can improve the cardiovascular health status of all communities.”
