A Gainesville man died Sunday, hours after he was pulled from the ocean in Myrtle Beach, S.C., police said.

Officials responded to a call of a distressed swimmer about 8 a.m., Myrtle Beach police said.

Raymundo Garcia Jr., 35, was holding a young family member in knee-deep water when a wave crashed over him. A lifeguard and another family member were able to pull the man from the water, but he later died at a nearby hospital, police said.

Garcia leaves behind a wife and two daughters, according to an online obituary.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Little & Davenport Funeral Home and Crematory in Gainesville.
