Sandy Springs is using an old-school method to clean up Hammond Park.

On Thursday, Aug. 10, more than 30 goats arrived and put their landscaping talents to work, eating up weeds and unwanted vegetation.

Sandy Springs spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said the goats will be at the park for the next several days.

“Goats for lawn maintenance is not a new concept, but a first-time use for the city,” Kraun said.

The goats come from a company named "Get Your Goats Rental," which is run by Michael and Kristin Swanson. It services most of the metro Atlanta area. Last fall, Roswell used the goats to help clean Old Mill Park.

On the website, the Swanson’s say that goats “thrive” on poison ivy, poison oak, blackberries, vines and more.

Kraun said that Hammond Park is the only area of Sandy Springs where the goats are being used right now, but the city is looking at other spots to use them.

“They are very efficient in their weed-eating skills,” Kraun said. “And are less expensive than their human counterparts for this type of work.”

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
