Forsyth County announced the recent completion of upgrades and expansions to its James Creek Water Reclamation Facility, and said it is expanding and finalizing upgrades at the Fowler Water Reclamation Facility.
The improvements at James Creek are intended to “influence reliability and redundancy” and follow a 2018 project that increased the facility’s capacity from 1.5 million to 2.5 million gallons per day, officials said.
Fowler, meanwhile, in response to area growth and to ensure system redundancy, is undergoing an expansion to double capacity to 5 million gallons per day; also, existing systems and equipment are being upgraded. The work is expected to be completed by this fall.
Lake Lanier is the source of drinking water for Forsyth County, and the water reclamation plant improvements – which comply with Georgia Environmental Protection Division requirements – are intended to return a larger percentage of withdrawn water to the lake, officials said. “Returning reclaimed water to Lake Lanier not only extends and protects our water supply from drought, it also helps maintain lake levels and is highly desired by our neighbors in Florida and Alabama who want us to return this valuable water to the river system,” said Water and Sewer Department Director Tim Perkins.
