A former Cobb County commissioner known for his widespread volunteerism died this week.

Joseph “Butch” Thompson died Tuesday at the age of 75, family and friends confirmed on Facebook. Cobb County Manager Rob Hosack said Thompson was first elected in 1979 and served on the commission for seven years.

The county manager said Thompson will be remembered for cooking and distributing smoked Thanksgiving turkeys, volunteering with the Marietta Kiwanis Club and paving a school.

Thompson was the founder and CEO of Butch Thompson Enterprises, a demolition, site-clearing, grading and paving company that got its start in 1975.

Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin said Thompson was the kind of man who would willingly come over and cut a person’s grass or clean his or her’s gutters. He also said Thompson was a hands-on public servant who did more for Cobb County outside the commission board room than inside it.

“I would describe him as a great neighbor,” he said. “He’s been a great community and very beloved.”

A death notice posted by Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home indicates a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31 at First Baptist Church of Marietta.
