The Fayette County Animal Shelter is adjusting its operations based on community precautions regarding the coronavirus. Director Jerry Collins issued a notice saying that the shelter will remain closed to the public until March 27, when further evaluations will be made.

Staff will continue to clean the shelter and care for the animals. Animal control officers will not be making active patrols, and will only respond to emergencies such as aggressive animals, bite cases, injured domestic animals, sick or aggressive rabies carriers, cruelty cases and law enforcement assistance. Confined stray animals will be taken back to their owners rather than to the shelter if those owners can be identified. Animals will be transported only for emergency medical treatment. Residents are asked to monitor local lost and found notices to help reunite lost pets with their families.

If the shelter reaches 100 percent capacity, volunteers will be asked to temporarily foster dogs or cats to free up kennel space.
