DeKalb County is giving its residents the chance to safely — and legally — recycle tires for free.

The event, called “Tire Amnesty Day,” is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be two tire dropoff locations: The DeKalb County Tax Commissioner’s Office parking lot at 4380 Memorial Drive, and the Seminole Road Landfill on 4203 Clevemont Road in Ellenwood.

Organized by the DeKalb County Sanitation Division, in partnership with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Tire Amnesty Day is aimed at reducing illegal tire-dumping, DeKalb County said in a statement.

Improper tire disposal can pose an environmental risk, in addition to being an eyesore. It can increase the chance for illnesses like Zika virus, West Nile virus and dengue fever, and serve as an ignition source for fires, causing air pollution, the county said.

DeKalb residents can bring up to 10 tires. Car and light-duty truck tires will be accepted, as well as smaller tires from wheelbarrows, golf carts and bicycles. Tires that are dropped off will then be recycled.
