DeKalb County has announced that Simpson Drive, between Fern Drive and Montreal Road, will be closed to through-traffic to repair the storm drainage system through 9 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18.
The county’s Watershed Management Department has been working to get a handle on the aging storm drain system, officials have said.
The AJC previously reported that in 2018, the county lowered the overall volume of major sewage spills to 5 million gallons of overflows versus 13 million recorded the previous year. The county had worked to address root causes of overflows, such as reducing fats and oils poured down kitchen drains and clearing debris that cause blockages.
In 2010, the county entered into a consent decree and committed to spend $326 million in upgrades by 2020.
Road closure and detour signs will be placed in the area to advise motorists of traffic restrictions.
