A DeKalb County police sergeant arrested in May for obstructing the investigation of fellow DeKalb police was fired Tuesday.

Former police Sgt. Jerry Banks was terminated after nearly 14 years with the department, police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

"An internal affairs investigation deemed Banks violated departmental policies of conduct unbecoming [an officer] and violation of the law," Parish said.

On May 25, Banks, 42, arrived at the home of Cherise McMoore as DeKalb detectives were executing a search warrant at her home, authorities said.

Police were investigating allegations that McMoore brandished a gun at one of her neighbors and threatened to beat the neighbor.

According to arrest warrants, Banks arrived at the home with McMoore and was "boisterous and disobedient" when investigators tried to conduct the arrest warrant.

Weeks earlier, Banks' wife was beaten and robbed outside their home while he was inside.

Banks' relationship to McMoore is unclear.
