Late last month, the DeKalb County commission set aside $1 million to bolster local nonprofits that provide residents with things like rent, utility and food assistance.

The county announced Thursday that the application period for groups hoping to get a share of the money is now open. Recipients that are selected for a grant will then distribute aid to residents.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has undermined the health and economic wellbeing of many of our citizens,” DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond said in a news release. “With support from the Board of Commissioners, we have established a program to work with local nonprofit organizations to provide vital necessities to our citizens.”

The deadline for nonprofits to submit applications is June 24.

Forms and more information can be found at dekalbcountyga.gov/coronavirus.

Funding for the program comes from $125 million the county received from the federal coronavirus aid package known as the CARES Act.

Commissioners have suggested the initial $1 million allocation could grow in the future.
