The Decatur Police Department is hosting a pair of classes next month aimed at teaching children safety and self-defense tips.

The sessions on Saturday, Feb. 1 will be run by Revved Up Kids, a metro Atlanta-based organization that provides young people with lessons to avoid dangerous situations.

The classes are aimed at "understanding who predators are and how they operate" and teaching simple self-defense tactics, according to the Revved Up Kids website.

There will be two classes in Decatur, one for Kindergarten through fifth graders, and one for middle school students. The class for the younger participants will run from 10 a.m. to noon, while the middle school class is 1 to 3 p.m. They will be held at the police department headquarters at 420 W. Trinity Place.

Families can visit the organization's website to register or learn more about the classes.
