"Drug activity" may have played a role in a Thursday shooting that killed a man at a Brookhaven apartment complex, city police announced Friday morning.

Travis Ridley, 26, of Atlanta died after city police tried to resuscitate him at Avana Uptown off Clairmont Road.

The shooting happened on the third floor of one of the buildings. Police believe neither the victim nor the wanted shooter lived there.

Investigators believe the shooter may have fired after the victim pulled a gun.

“Detectives did recover a firearm at the scene they believe belonged to the victim,” Maj. Brandon Gurley said.

Gurley said police want the public’s help identifying anyone involved so they can “speak with them and obtain a better understanding of this incident.”

Residents of the complex are on edge.

Ashley Jamieson told Channel 2 Action News she heard eight gunshots down the hall from her apartment.

"I heard running, then I heard tires squeal and ran to the window to see if I could see someone driving off," Jamieson said.

She couldn’t see anyone and called 911.

She saw police trying to save him in the hallway. He was later pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.
