A Creekside High School freshman died Monday after football conditioning at the south Fulton County school, district officials said.
A coach noticed Kamari McGowan looked pale and pulled him off the field, the district said. The paramedics were called, and emergency workers took the teen to the hospital, where he died.
“Fulton County Schools is saddened by the heartbreaking news of the death of Kamari,” spokeswoman Susan Hale said Tuesday in a statement. “... The cause of death has not been confirmed.”
This is not the first time a Creekside football player has died. De’Antre Turman, a junior cornerback for the Seminoles, died after being hurt on the Banneker High School field in College Park in August 2013. Turman was one of the state’s top prospects for the 2015 class and already had a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky.
Grief counselors were at the school, located on Herndon Road in Fairburn, on Tuesday.
They will be there “as long as necessary to assist students and teachers who are experiencing grief,” Hale said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the McGowen family.”
