Four Georgia State University students and a former state representative were arrested Monday during a sit-in outside the office of school president Mark Becker.
Since the university and its development team acquired Turner Field and surrounding properties in January for $30 million, tensions have been high.
The redevelopment plan, if successful, could transform what is now acres of lonely parking lots into a mix of retail, offices, student housing, apartments and a southern extension of Georgia State’s campus.
Longtime residents and others said they don’t want to be left out of that planning process. They want the university and their development team to sign a legal agreement to address gentrification and other issues that could result from redevelopment in the area.
The names of the students arrested were not available. According to a Twitter post, former state Rep. Doug Dean was among those arrested. Dean has lived in the area zoned for redevelopment for years.
The arrests occurred exactly one week after another group set up camp next to The Ted to protest plans for the Atlanta Braves’ former home.
Georgia State is converting it into a football stadium. It is expected to be completed in time for the Panthers’ first game of the 2017 season on Thurs., Aug. 31, against Tennessee State University.
